Meet Amy

I have struggled with the answer when asked, "What do you do?" and it isn't work-related. Ultimately, we settled on that I find things and untangle things. But I also read (a lot), pretend to wake surf, and watch Hallmark films.

The Weekend Away
it was amazing
So so good! Orla and Kate are long-time best friends off on a girls' weekend away. Kate is a bit of a player who is trying to get back at her soon-to-be-ex, causing her to spend frivolously and do drugs and hook-ups. Orla is a new mom ex...

Maybe Next Time
really liked it
Parts were a screaming 5 and parts were like “what?” And just irritated me. It is a Groundhog Day premise about a family of four - the mom is caught up in her own life and missing all that is going on around her with her kids and then he...

Mother’s Day 2010

When I was young, I always thought I would love and look forward to holidays like Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day.  Instead I have learned my favorite low key holidays are Halloween and St Patrick’s Day.

Halloween and St Patrick’s Day are great holidays because they are all about having fun.  Dressing up is suggested for both and there is always good food.  (I realize not everyone is a fan of corned beef and cabbage but that is simply because you haven’t tried our family recipe).

Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day were all created by marketers who needed a few excuses to sell cards and guilt people into paying forced tribute to those they love and cherish daily.

I know that my kids and my husband love me.  I know it every single day.  Why on earth do we need a holiday to “show” me something I already know?

If they don’t do something, then I’m supposed to feel sad and unloved?  Or worse, I ‘m supposed to be bugged that no monetary tribute was made?

Don’t mistake my tone for bitterness.  I have been well taken care of on both Valentine’s and Mother’s Day.  But my favorite is when I’m showered with affection (and sometimes gifts) just because my family loves me on any old day.

How do you feel about these holidays?  What does your family do to celebrate Mother’s Day?

I completely agree! It’s far better to show love and appreciation everyday rather than on a day designated by Hallmark!
I did love getting to be a part of the Mother’s Day celebration with your family. I have always considered them to be my adopted family! It was a wonderful treat to see your mom (and you and family) since my mom is out of the country. Thank you for letting me crash the party and be a part of the family on yet another holiday!

  • I agree with this about any holiday. It’s what you make it. I love to celebrate, but you
right – the celebration should be everyday.

    Beautiful photo.

  • Oh, well put Good Woman! You don’t sound bitter at all -I think most mothers have felt exactly the same way. I love a bouquet of wildflowers more when they show up unexpectedly on an idle Tuesday. Also, I’m lucky enough to have my mother a few miles away and I still feel like Mother’s Day is about her anyway!
She hates cooking, and I love it. Every year I make her (and the rest of the family) Sunday dinner. Incidentally, that’s what I give my Dad for Father’s Day as well. They appreciate that more than anything. The best way to their heart is through good country cooking. 🙂

Happy Mother’s Day. I hope it is low key and wonderful for you.

Yes! I agree completely with this!

I especially liked this part: “Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day were all created by marketers who needed a few excuses to sell cards and guilt people into paying forced tribute to those they love and cherish daily.”

P.S. My favorite holidays are Independence Day and Thanksgiving. 🙂
